Vintage Santons Paul Fouque Provence France Nativity 12 Figures, Stable
In France, it is the custom to display the manger scene or "Creche", in the churches and homes during the Christmas season. In addition to the Holy Family and the Kings, they also show the various village folk as they ply their traditional trades and dressed in styles of the province from whence they came. They are avidly collected by the French who will add one or two to their collection each year. Santon in French (in Provence) means a small hand painted terracotta figurine of a nativity character.
Each is marked as Paul Fouque on the bottom. Jesus is hand marked on the bottom.
The stable is an amazing piece with much detail.
